An analogy to an Asperger's Syndrome diagnosis that I often like to use is similar to why mountains have base camps. The base camp allows mountaineers to take a much-needed break, review their progress, prepare for the next part of the journey before making the push for the summitt. Similarly, an Asperger's Syndrome diagnosis can enable one to revivew their life thus far before assessing how to manage the next stage of their life, including preparing for aspects they may find difficult to negotiate. The diagnosis also enables one to gain a stronger understanding of who they are in relation to their strengths and weaknesses, thus looking at how one can effectively adapt to their surroundings in relation to their condition.

Trekking in mountainous regions in has become one of my favourite pastimes. I have undertaken treks to raise funds for autism charities and for personal fulfillment and I feel it has reinforced my personal development in terms of being able to cope with physical demands in extreme environments. A trek itself is in many ways analagous to my own life as a person with Asperger's Syndrome, relating to the ups and downs that the condition presents.
