Asperger's Syndrome College/University Workshop

About this Workshop
Moving on from school to college or university is a major transition for anyone, but for students with Asperger's Syndrome it can present new and different needs, particularly if living away from home for the first time. The purpose of this workshop is to give college and university staff an understanding of Asperger's Syndrome in a college or university environment, looking at how it affects a student with the condition and others around them. Though primarily aimed at academic staff, content is also relevant to non-academic staff including learning resource centre staff, college/university careers officers, student assistants/support workers, extra-curricula co-ordinators (e.g. fitness instructors).

Themes Covered
Understanding Asperger's Syndrome and how it may affect a student with the condition in a college/university environment, academic and social
Asperger's Syndrome learning styles, looking at possible strengths and weaknesses
Study skills and Asperger's Syndrome
How Asperger's Syndrome affects the student and those around them in college or university, including in seminar/debate situations
Asperger's Syndrome and the social aspect of college and university life
Asperger's Syndrome beyond college or university (e.g. postgraduate study, employment)
Outcomes
From this workshop, participants will
    Gain a stronger understanding of Asperger's Syndrome in a college or university environment
    Develop an understandingof possible reasonable adjustments needed, including being flexible in relation to strengths and weaknesses 
    Help enable students with Asperger's Syndrome to achieve their academic potential and feel involved in the social aspect of college/university life
    Help prepare students with Asperger's Syndrome for life beyond college or university
